INSTRUCTIONS FOR OUTPATIENTS

Referring Physician: Please check the preparation for required examination. For preparations not listed or other questions, please call 219-864-2900 or TOLL FREE 888-864-2900.

sq15.gif (816 bytes)I.V.P. (INTRAVENOUS PYELOGRAM) OR INTRAVENOUS CHOLANGIOGRAM
a) Four (4) DULCOLAX (BISACODYL) tablets at 4:00 p.m. day before examination (if not contraindicated). Do not chew or crush. Pills must be swallowed whole and not taken within one hour of antacids or milk.
b) Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (may take medication with small amount of water).
c) DULCOLAX (BISACODYL) suppository per rectum two (2) hours before bedtime night before examination. Insert suppository into rectum as far as possible. Retain for 20 minutes, if possible.
d) See note.
Patients having examinations requiring IV contrast - Glucophage should be stopped at the time of or prior to the procedure. See PHYSICIAN INFORMATION.

a) Six (6) TELEPAQUE tablets at 4:00 p.m.the night before the examination.
b) Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (may take medication with small amount of water).
c) Cleansing enema in early a.m. prior to examination.

sq15.gif (816 bytes)COLON EXAMINATION - BARIUM ENEMA age 13 and above.
a) Preparation starts at 12:00 noon the day before the examination.
b) Patient to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water or juices throughout the day.
c) 12:00 (noon) - begin clear liquid diet.
d) 4:00 PM - Four (4) DULCOLAX (BISACODYL) tablets (if not contraindicated). Do not chew or crush. Pills must be swallowed whole and not taken within one hour of antacids or milk.
e) 5:00 PM - Clear liquid supper.
f) 6:00 PM - Drink one entire bottle of MAGNESIUM CITRATE (10 oz.).
g) Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (may take medication with small amount of water).
DAY OF EXAMINATION:
a) 5:30 AM - DULCOLAX (BISACODYL) suppository in rectum. Retain for 20 minutes if possible.
b) May take medications with a small amount of water.

a) Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (may take medication with small amount of water).
b) See note.
c) If UGI series follows colon, take four (4) DULCOLAX (BISACODYL) tablets at 4:00 p.m. the day before the examination. Do not chew or crush. Pills must be swallowed whole and not taken within one hour of antacids or milk.
d) Encourage liquids following examination.

Up to 2 years -
a) Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.

2 to 12 years -

c) Cleansing enema at bedtime.

NOTE: IF IN DOUBT, CALL ADVANCED IMAGING CENTER FOR INFORMATION. FOR ADULTS, IF DULCOLAX (BISACODYL) tablets are not available, you may use 2 ounces of castor oil instead.
